Sweden Boat Market 2026: Maturity, Longevity and Sustainability
Sweden remains one of Europe’s strongest recreational boating markets. There are an estimated 750,000 to 950,000 leisure boats in use nationwide (Business Region Göteborg, 2021). Sweden ranks among the highest in the world for boat ownership per capita, third after Norway and Finland, with approximately 2 boats per 10,000 inhabitants.
Although Sweden‘s market is predominantly mature, we are seeing a shift in the types of boats people are looking for.
Sweden Leads in Electric Marine Propulsion
Innovative and progressive policies are supporting environmental responsibility in the Swedish boating market. As a result, growth is being seen in both electric and hybrid leisure vessels. The Swedish electric recreational boating market is forecast to grow at 7.12% CAGR through 2026 (Mordor Intelligence, 2026).
This change over to electric marine propulsion is being driven by fuel prices. Higher fuel costs strengthen the economic case for electric boats by lowering operational costs and making environmental benefits more attractive.
There is, additionally, an ongoing European Union-funded project which will install approximately 400 electric charging stations. These will be fitted along the Swedish and Norwegian coast, from Gothenburg to Kristiansand. This project is consequently targeting the reduction of CO₂ emissions from the combined 1 million recreational motorboats in the two countries, which currently emit around 400,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year (Yachting Pages, 2025).
Swedish boat owners increasingly seek solutions that:
- Reduce chemical treatments and environmental impact
- Maintain performance in Nordic seasonal conditions
- Lower long-term maintenance costs
- Contribute to lifecycle sustainability (RISE, 2023).
Market Size and Segment Dynamics

Sweden’s recreational boating market is predominantly mature. Although growth is still observed in specific segments, such as electric and vessels under 30 feet. According to the digital boat indicators market analysis, Sweden holds around 2.6% of Europe’s market. This reflects a modest but strategic share in continental boating activity.
It is expected that the 30ft segment will be the fastest-growing segment in 2026, with a projected 6.69% CAGR globally, driven, in particular, by younger buyers seeking affordable entry points into the market (Mordor Intelligence, 2026).
Globally, the SuperYacht Times 2025 State of Yachting report highlights steady brokerage activity and improved new-build predictability, suggesting, overall, a foundation for a stable 2026 market environment. But Sweden’s market strength lies in its scale and maturity. IBISWorld estimates that the broader Swedish ship and boat building industry will reach €709.2 million in 2026, with the recreational yacht and boat segment valued at approximately €297.4 million.
Flexiteek Sweden: Supporting a Long-Term Market

We believe Sweden to be one of the strongest recreational boating markets, which is why we have a fabrication hub in Sweden.
Based in Fagersta, Flexiteek Sweden coordinates material development, panel fabrication for OEMs, installation, as well as supporting our global training process.
The plant was first established in 2001, and production began early in 2002. Furthermore, in early 2024, the production facility relocated to a state-of-the-art new building in Fagersta with solar panels, EV chargers, and ground source heat pumps to help make this our most sustainable global location.
This facility aligns with Sweden’s environmental priorities, supporting long-term operational responsibility.
Allt för Sjön 2026: Key Industry Event
Coming up in our calendar is Allt för Sjön, Sweden’s largest indoor boat show, which takes place across two weekends in March 2026 at Stockholmsmässan, Älvsjö, during the 5–8 March & 12–15 March 2026.
Our Swedish team will be exhibiting at the show, providing owners, builders, and designers the opportunity to see the product in person, to see the lifelike graining, wide colour range. As well as to ask the questions that matter most beyond a specification sheet.
Looking Ahead to 2026
Sweden’s boating market in 2026 is defined by:
- One of Europe’s largest installed leisure boat bases
- An ageing fleet is driving refit and upgrade demand
- Strong sustainability and environmental expectations
- Steady equipment consumption and participation
- Continued export competitiveness
For suppliers and manufacturers, success therefore hinges on demonstrating durability, lifecycle value, and credible environmental responsibility. With over two decades of experience and continued investment in sustainable infrastructure, Flexiteek Sweden is uniquely positioned to meet the market’s long-term priorities.
