Women in Marine: Driving Craft, Innovation and Change at Flexiteek

Across the marine industry, there’s a quiet but powerful shift happening, and at Flexiteek, it’s something we’re proud to be part of every single day.

From the outside, marine manufacturing can still feel like a traditionally male-dominated space. But step inside our world, and you’ll find a very different story. One shaped by talented, driven women working across every part of the business, bringing skill, precision, creativity, and leadership to everything they do.

Women in Marine

Women remain significantly underrepresented across the marine industry. According to the BIMCO/ICS 2021 Seafarer Workforce Report from 2021, women represent only 1.2% percent of the global seafarer workforce. In manufacturing more broadly, the picture is improving, with women now making up to 28.4% of the workforce, according to The Manufacturer, but there is still progress to be made.

Encouragingly, the landscape is evolving. Today, there are more opportunities than ever across manufacturing, design, engineering, sales and marketing. And businesses like Flexiteek are actively contributing to that shift by building inclusive teams and showcasing the people behind the work.

Because diversity isn’t just about representation, it drives better outcomes. A broader mix of perspectives leads to stronger ideas, more effective problem-solving and ultimately, a more innovative and resilient industry.

Craftsmanship at the Core

Behind every role, every team and every finished product are the people who make it all happen.

At our headquarters, women are not only leading in departments like sales, marketing and HR, but they are also working hands-on in the production of Flexiteek and Wilks products. From pellet to final product, they play a vital role in creating marine decking and fendering solutions to an exceptional standard.

And this commitment to quality doesn’t stop at one site.

Across our international sites in Sweden, Poland and Denmark, women are integral members of our fabrication teams, designing and manufacturing bespoke decks used across the global marine industry.

Every deck that leaves our facilities reflects the same attention to detail, the same pride in workmanship and the same commitment to excellence. And behind many of those decks are women whose skills and expertise are helping to shape the reputation of Flexiteek on a global scale.

Celebrating Women Across Our Distributor Network

Our story doesn’t stop at our own facilities.

Flexiteek works with a global network of distributors, including many women-led and women-owned businesses. These partnerships play a vital role in how we grow, innovate, and stay closely connected to the evolving needs of the industry.

Through our ongoing blog series, we’ve had the opportunity to highlight some of these inspiring individuals sharing their journeys, their challenges and their successes.

As Jan shared in her feature, My biggest challenge would be the fact that the marine industry is such a male-dominated industry; being a woman has certainly had its challenges, but I have earned my own reputation over the years”

That willingness to embrace the unfamiliar is a theme that runs through so many of these stories.

Izzy echoed a similar sentiment when reflecting on her career: “The Yacht Industry was a completely new world to me – Don’t let what you don’t know hold you back.”

Why Visibility Matters in the Marine Industry

These aren’t just individual journeys; they are reflections of a wider shift happening across the industry.

Women are entering marine through different routes, bringing diverse experiences and building careers that span technical, commercial and creative roles.

As Izzy also noted, “there is always something new to learn and experience every day.”

That sense of progression and possibility is key. It’s what turns a job into a long-term career and what makes the marine industry such an exciting space for the next generation.

For too long, the marine industry has been perceived as an industry with limited accessibility. But that perception is changing.

Because when people can see themselves reflected, they’re far more likely to step into it.

Looking Ahead: Building the Future of Marine Together

While there is still progress to be made across the wider sector, the direction is clear.

At Flexiteek, we are proud of the role women play across our business from headquarters to our international manufacturing sites, and throughout our distributor network. Their contribution is not only shaping our products, but also influencing our culture, our standards and our future.

And this is just the beginning.

As more women step into the marine industry, bring their skills, share their perspectives and build their careers, the industry itself becomes stronger, more innovative and more inclusive.
